Outdoor thermal baths near Florence?

Hello! Which is the nearest outdoor thermal bath to Florence. I have browsed both the Internet and also this page and "discovertuscany.com" and the closest one I can find is 1.45 h away. Is that correct?

Kind regards
Henry

Ciao Henry,

Yes, the closest outdoor thermal baths are in southern Tuscany so they are not that close. You can head to Bagni di Petriolo, to Bagno Vignoni, San Filippo or the ever popular Saturnia. I think the bagni di Petriolo is the closest, at 1.30 h away.

There are also spots of "natural" hot springs here and there, for example, in northwestern Tuscany at Bagni di Lucca and Equi Terme, along the rivers and away from the towns, some definitely require having help from locals in finding them. But these are the more "popular" and well-known, so that is where it easier to head to.

Keep in mind there are many other thermal areas that are closer, but they are enclosed and no longer open in nature so no longer free. Practically all the towns that have "Terme" in their names are born from having springs there. In case you would prefer to enjoy the warm spring waters closer to Florence, there are very nice spas in Montecatini Terme, San Giuliano Terme, Rapolano Terme and Serre di Rapolano.

Dear Lourdes.
Thank you so much for your reply! When I see the pictures of the "natural" hot springs, it makes me really want to go there and experience "live". Do you by any chance know how warm any of them are? Kind regards Henry

I know what you mean, going to them would be a special and unique experience while in Tuscany. You'll need a car for sure, and if you have the time, I would suggest you try to use a base closer to the hot springs, maybe spend an overnight somewhere in the area and maybe even make it to more than one?

They are all pretty warm, I know the Saturnia ones are pretty popular in the winter time as well. This website has detailed info on the composition of the water and the temperatures, but it's only in Italian. Check it out and maybe you can still get out the info you're looking for - https://www.gogoterme.com/le-terme-piu-belle-della-toscana.html

What time of the year will you be visiting? Longer days make it easier to make the longer trips and back in a day, but since you want to enjoy the experience and relax, my motto is always to encourage THAT and suggest to stay a night over ;)!

As I usually say whenever I travel abroad. So little time - so much to do! We have four days (3,5 to be exact) to explore the area in and around Florence. I wish I had more days but.... We will arrive mid May. And I agree, we will try to enjoy the time as much as possible and take it slow. Thank you again for your reply and good suggestion!

Thank you for the coffee!! :D I appreciate it!

I know what you mean, 3.5 days will be too short, I would recommend with that amount of time that you just concentrate on Florence and places close by that are easy to reach with train, such as Pisa or Lucca, if you've never been. They do take about an hour/1.5 hr to reach but the ride lets you see the countryside. Another possibility is San Gimignano, you'll need to take the bus there and it becomes a whole day thing if you don't want to be in a hurry. But Florence definitely merits the whole time, if you want to stay put and want to see all of the main sights without rushing.
