Chiantigiana Road by bus?

Any update on if it's possible to go from Florence to Siena by bus on the Chiantigiana Road?
I saw a previous post of from 2014 that kind of said it would be very difficult.

If going on that road isn't possible, is there another way you advise someone in Florence without a car to see the tuscan countryside? I'm going for the first time in may.

Ciao tuscanquestions,

Sorry I had missed your earlier post.... do you mean whether there is a bus you can take that takes you across the entire way from Florence to Siena?
There isn't, unfortunately. Not one that goes down through the Chiantigiana and does a slow route. There are buses that go down, but you'd have to change buses and they aren't meant to connect so you would get stranded. You'd have to go first to Greve, then from Greve to Panzano, then from Panzano to Castellina and then finally to Siena. You can't make it in a day!

There is the "slow" and "fast" buses that go through Poggibonsi from Florence to Siena. It is a little less scenic but do work to get you from one point to the next. The slow one does make more stops and can be considered a bit more scenic since it leaves the main roadway and takes part of the Via Cassia.

You can see the bus schedules here:
slow - https://www.at-bus.it/media/mod_timetables/timetables/R/131.pdf
rapido - https://www.at-bus.it/media/mod_timetables/timetables/R/131R.pdf

The new bus company for Tuscany has a pretty user unfriendly website so I put the direct links to make it easier. It took me a while to find them! Let me know if I can help further.

thanks so much for the info Lourdes. So what do you think is the best way for someone in Florence with no car to see pretty scenery like I see in the pictures? Any bus route you recommend?

I would suggest taking a guided tour, like one that takes you to San Gimignano and Siena and Chianti - take a look at this one:
This way you get to see the landscape and not worry about driving anywhere. You also enjoy some exploring and wine tasting ;)

do you know what route they take? is it the same route as the public bus takes?

Similar route but not always the same. It doesn’t matter too much, as the countryside offers views across the entire way and the Florence-Siena offers views of some places that you don’t see on other roads.
