Driving through Tuscany

New member
Hi all, can you please help us with the itinerary:
We are planning to drive from Venice (after spending 2 nights there) all the way to Rome at the end of July.
I have booked a rental car in Mestre for 2 days on July 24th - 25th.
I am an experienced driver and do not mind long hours behind the wheel.
It was with a heavy heart that we decided to skip Florence and leave it till the next visit to properly explore it.

The original plan is:
Day 1: Drive via SR222, stopping at Greve, Panzano, Castellina, San Gimignano and spend a night in one of the agroturismos nearby Siena.
Day 2: Spend the morning, exploring Siena, then visit Montalcino or Montepulciano (or both??) and head over to Rome and drop the car at the Termini.
I need to drop the rental car at 7 pm in Rome.

I have a feeling that I am trying to squeeze too much in 2 days.
If so can you please tell me what are the places I could maybe drop from the plan and what are the ones I should add to the plan?
Can you recommend the small towns we should not miss on our drive.
Any other suggestions regarding the itinerary?

Grazie mille!

You are right about being a bit ambitious. It will take you at least 3 full hours from Mestre to Greve in Chianti.

However with your limited time in Chianti you might want to go Impruneta, San Donato and San Gimignano.

You can visit Siena in the morning - but afterwards I suggest that you do either Montepulciano OR Montalcino, and not both. Otherwise you won't really enjoy any of it because you will be so rushed.

Just the drive from Siena, to Buonconvento, then over to San Quirico, head towards Pienza and Montepulciano is very beautiful. Following the road called SR2 or the via Cassia, you will most definitely want to stop and take lots of photos.

Buon Viaggio,
