Lucca to Cinque Terre day trip

Hello - What is the best way to visit CT from Lucca? We would be going on our own, without a guide or tour group, by train. We would like to see Portovenere. Thanks for any advice.

The easiest is by TRAIN! Get train to La Spezia, usually you have to change trains there to one of the five small towns. Are you planning to hike, stay overnight or just so a day trip?

From Riomaggiore you can take a ferry to Portovenere, there is no train service there. You either catch the ferry/traghetto or drive or take bus there. The easiest is the ferry from one of the four towns, Riomaggiore is just furthest south and closest so it makes sense to get it from there.
