Palazzo Pubblico in Siena - Museo Civico - Torre del Mangia - ticket office / online ticket -

I’ll be visiting Tuscany – especially the beautiful city of Siena – from September 18 to 28. During my stay, I plan to visit the Museo Civico to finally see Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good and Bad Government frescoes in person. I’ve already studied them in Vienna, so it will be very exciting for me!


I read on the official website that the visit can also include the Torre del Mangia, which I would love to climb. I have a few questions:

• Are Lorenzetti’s frescoes located inside the Museo Civico?
• Is there a combined ticket for the Museo Civico and the Torre del Mangia?
• Can tickets be purchased online, or only on-site?

You will love the Palazzo Pubblico and the Allegory, it is quite spectacular!! One of my favorite spots in Siena!

As for the practical info:
- the frescoes ARE inside the Museo Civico
- there are combined tickets for both Museo Civico + Torre del Mangia
- these combined tickets can ONLY be bought on site. This is because the Torre del Mangia can be temporarily closed at any time depending on rain or wind, so for the museum, it is more practical to sell tickets only if the tower is open. You can buy tickets directly inside Palazzo Pubblico and if you buy a combined ticket, you need to start your visit by first climbing the tower and then the museum. We've done it, lots of steps but doable and great view from above of the city and of the Piazza del Campo below.

The museum and tower open at 10am, and the only thing about the tower is that the climb is limited to 25 people at a time and every 45min. So you do want to go straight there and get your ticket, hopefully you get lucky and don't need to wait long but it is more likely you will get a time for entry later in the day so you will have to go do something else and return for the visit at the set time.
