Buongiorno, we are staying in Tavernelle Val di Pesa and will not have our own hire car. We are thinking of going into Florence to attend a Wednesday evening meeting of the local Toastmasters club that meets in P.za di Cestello. We can take the AT Bus 370A in the morning or afternoon, but unfortunately the last bus returns at 17:40 too early for us. Is there another way to back to the frazione without having to take Uber/Lyft or taxi? Maybe to another comune nearby and we can ask one of our siblings to pick us up?

By what time do you think your meeting will be over? The last 131 bus to Tavernelle is actually at 7.53pm from Piazza Tasso - https://maps.app.goo.gl/TAE5RFuxb8FHHMq77 otherwise there is another bus, the 368A - https://maps.app.goo.gl/utZSLponKYepNnnE8 - that also leaves Piazza Tasso later at 8.46pm (for both buses, you will need to buy AT EXTRAURBANO bus tickets). This second one ends in San Casciano so doesn't take you all the way, but it sounds like someone else does have a car that can go pick you up there?

So if you manage to leave your meetup and get one of those two, you should be able to avoid the cost of a taxi. There are no ubers/lyfts in Florence or Italy, the taxi companies/labor unions have ensured that.

The last option is to contact a private driver (called NCCs here) and ask for a quote ahead of time. That way you can leave at whatever time you set, with a set price for the ride and not leave to chance or surprise at what a taxi fare might cost. Even a taxi, I would ask for the cost before getting in and setting off to anywhere outside of Florence province. There are set rates and cost table inside the taxis that you can double check, but they always add on surcharges for night hours, for km, for leaving the comune, etc. They essentially make you pay for the trip back into town, since they most likely will be empty.
