Getting from Pisa to Florence on June 2nd (Republic Day)

Hi everyone,

I have recently booked flights and accomodation to visit Florence for a week from 2nd June 2017... I have only recently realised that 2nd June is a public holiday, and am now wondering how that might affect the logistics of getting from Pisa Airport to central Florence? Do the regular trains still run as frequently on this day? We aren't scheduled to land in Pisa until around 5pm.

Additionally, will shops/restaurants be open the evening we arrive in Florence? We are staying in self-catering accomodation so would have been looking to pop out for some groceries or a meal when we arrive. Although if that's not likely to be possible we can make sure we eat on the flight or bring a few snacks with us.

Any general advice for travelling on Republic Day would be greatly appreciated!

Getting around on the 2nd of June

Buongiorno,

Between the trains (which will be limited due to the holiday) and the buses (Terrevision, ecc.) you will find that it won't be difficult to get to Florence.

The city center always has something open, little cafes, mini markets and of course, restuarants will be open - just hop over to San Lorenzo ( https://www.visitflorence.com/what-to-do-in-florence/shopping/san-lorenzo-central-market.html )

I would also suggest asking the property owner if they can provide you with a welcome basket with a couple of necessities - just so you don't need to hussle (water, wine, yogurt etc...) Many will help you out especially if there is a holiday in the middle.

Buon Viaggio,

Good morning!!

I will be in a private tour with my family in Toscana the following weekend, I know very well Firenze because every year from 2005 we travel with my husband´s students in february, but in this time I have planned visit Florence with my older mother the Sunday 2nd June. I have seen that is the Italian Republic Day and also it is celebrate Firenze calcio storico, so I would like to know if it would be possible to visit normally or, the city will be a little overwhelmed . I have planned arrive early in the morning and park in the Beccaria parking because we are sleeping in San Gimignano.

Another question, if is a bank holidays, the Porcelino and San Lorenzo markets are operational? I would appreciate your advices.

Ciao Veronica,

It's true it is Italy's Republic Day and thus a national holiday AND that day there is also a semi-final game for the Calcio Storico (which will be played in Piazza Santa Croce) this Sunday, June 2.
If you're coming in the morning, you should be fine, as the Calcio Storico parade through the streets of the center starts around 4pm (and it is fun to watch so you might want to stick around for that), while the match isn't played until after 5.30pm.

The city won't be particularly overwhelmed for those events - it will just be busy because it is already nice weather, June and lots of people are coming to Florence. The markets, however, will be closed as it is Sunday - that's generally the rule, but now that I think about it, many changes happen in the high season and it is possible that in this season they might actually be running on Sundays as well, but I am not sure of that. I guess I will have to go downtown Sunday morning and take a look so I know the answer for sure about it!!
