Dear all,

I would like to check if we will be able to see sunflower fields on the drive from florence to chianti through the SS2 drive? We are travelling 13-15 June. Thank you

Sunflowers in Tuscany

Though you will find some early bloomers in mid June, normally the sunflowers are in full force around July and August. I believe you are referring to the road SR222 - via Chiantigiana which heads out of Florence on a southward journey through Chianti towards Siena. The closer you get to Siena the more likely it is for you to see fields of sunflowers. These are a rotating crop, so it's not always easy to predict exactly what fields will be boasting these beautiful flowers - but it is a sure thing that you will find some along the way. If I note any fields in the next month I will be sure to log in and give you coordinates !

The SS2 is called the Cassia road - as Donna mentioned, being a rotating crop they never show up in the same place. But I have seen them in the area between Colle Val d'Elsa and Monteriggioni in the past but generally later, late June, early July... I have to say this is a warm year, cherries are already popping out when they generally come out later, so you might get lucky and see some!!

Dear friends!
This is my first experience chatting and I am scared, but I wanted to meet you because this site is awasone! This is our first trip to Tuscany, we are from Venezuela but live in Miami and we are dying to see sunflowers!
We arrived today and will stay for 2 weeks ... Is there any chance to see our dream come true?
I will be checking for news daily. Thanks so much!!
God bless

Ciao the Tovars and welcome to the forum!

Hope you've enjoyed your first few days in Tuscany - where are you staying at, in a city or in the countryside? If you're here for 2 weeks, hopefully you'll also be in the countryside and rent a car.
That is the best way to guarantee a chance at seeing some sunflowers, even if it is a little early we're going through a heat wave and who knows, they might pop up while you're here!

There is no set place for you to go see them, but if you drive around on day trips the chance is you'll find some along the way. I've most often seen them closer to Siena, so make sure to pay attention around that area. Good luck!

Sunflowers SOS

Thanks so much Lourdes!
We were so exited to read your response! We have been checking the forum
Praying for some news :)
We are staying at la Ferriera at Loro Ciuffenna and have been driving around looking for the subflowers ... Nothing around this area or Arezzo, Cortona, etc but we will continue our search. Next week we will go to Cinque Terre, Siena and the Unbria area... We will certainly take your advise!
We have faith!!!! Keep us posted
And please do send ideas, comments or suggestions ... We are looking for thermal watters, horseback-riding, renting bikes etc it is so helpful!
We will also be sharing and responding to help others
Have a blessed day!
The Tovars

Dear all,

My husband and I were driving along SS1 going from Pisa to Viareggio today and we saw some sunflowers. The spot was where the railway was on the left hand side and the autostrada on the right. They were only small plants but the sight was so lovely. Just what I had been looking for and hoped to see. If I see any more on my travels I will post the location.

Thanksssss so much! I really appreciate the feedback... We are leaving Sunday and seeing the sunflower fields is a BIG dream!
We also git info from people in Maremma so we will go there! I heard the beach is sooooo beautiful too!

Wonderful to hear some sightings, that they are starting to bloom ;)

Tovars - it seems you're in luck! definitely, if you head to Maremma from Siena, you might see some more! We've seen them along the first part of the road just south of Siena in the past.
