4 nights in Tuscany

We are doing a road trip in Italy in late June and will be driving from Bologna to Florence and then to Sorrento. We are planning to spend 4 nights in Florence/Tuscany and it will be our first time in Italy (so lots to see and experience!). We were thinking of basing ourselves in Florence (for 3 nights) and do day trips out. And then spend 1 night in Montepulciano to break up the drive down to Sorrento. Our rough itinerary looks like this:
- day 1 spend in Florence
- day 2 day trip to San Gimignano
- day 3 day trip to Siena and then head to MontePulciano, where we would spend our 4th night.
The next day we would spend the morning in MontePulciano and then drive down to Sorrento. Is this a good idea or would you suggest something else? Can you give some advice on best locations to stay given we will have a car.

The itinerary sounds great, moving down on your last day as well. With a car, just make sure to check out places that offer parking - if they are in a restricted traffic area, they should let you know/cover the entrance to get to them!! That way you won't get any tickets for entering into the center - generally, if they offer parking, either they aren't in a restricted traffic area or will let you know how to get to them and then drive back out to a nearby parking!
