Bus for day trips in Winter

Hi, I’ll be in Siena in December and am planning on using public transit only. I was perusing this page:

and noticed that bus lines run pretty infrequently for Montepulciano, montalcino, and Chianti region. So I decided to look at the bus time table for Siena to montepulciano:

And in order to get to montepulciano, I’d have to take the early train (~6:30 am) to Buonconvento and take the 112 bus from Buonconvento to Montepulciano; otherwise I’d have to wait for 112 bus from Siena at 1 pm, leaving me only 4 hours of daylight to explore. Additionally, this bus chart may change in the winter?? I’m not sure if this schedule will even be reliable for my trip.

All of this is to say- should I plan to drive for my day trips from Siena? Can I plan to bus and rent a car last minute if the bus system proves to not be conducive? Will there even be cars available for me to rent last minute (December off-season, automatic cars only).
