Day trip ideas from Incisa in Val d'Arno

We will be staying very near Incisa in Val d'Arno for 6 weeks starting mid October. We have a few friends and family who will come stay with us for 1 to 2 weeks at a time. We of course want to visit many of the hill towns, but we just need a plan for how to get it done within a week to 10 days (as we will 'host' our friends/family for a week to 10 days at a time). We will probably need to repeat a day trip or two for each set of our guests.

Also, is there any sensible way to drive into Florence from Incisa to visit for a day, or should we just take the train?

Ciao,

from Incisa is very simple visit Florence and also Arezzo with the train. In fact, there are many regional trains that connect Incisa to both cities. However, at Incisa there is also the highway, and so it becomes really easy to reach Florence in 20 minutes.

Another city and another area that you can visit in a day from Incisa is Siena and the Chianti. You can reach Siena through the SP69 or bus and you can reach the Chianti Area through the beautiful Greve in Chianti.

Day trips, Driving, trains,

Ciao,

Thank you. Taking a train to Arezzo is a great idea. We just can not decide which towns to visit. As for Firenze, we know we can drive, and we can take the train, but what is your advice? I worry about the ZTL's and other restrictions, and parking-- it may be expensive to park. What is the best website to get train schedules, and where can we find information on parking? Che cosa mi consiglia?

trains in Italy

the best site is http://www.trenitalia.com, and you will find it in English as well.

Buy your tickets online when you can, saves a lot of time at the Florence train station. Your average train ride would be from 30 - 50 min, and it costs about 5 Euros each way. It runs rather frequently so you don't need to worry about not getting a train home at night if you decide to enjoy a dinner in town.

Probably when you add it all up using the train or going by car will COST the same - but it is true you don't need to worry about parking. They run quite frequently. I am totally understand your concerns about parking and driving in the city (it took me a couple of months to be comfortable).

As for places to visit while you are here, the big towns are always sought after by first timers, but you can also include an excursion coupled with a big town like - San Gimignano and Certaldo or Siena and Monteriggioni or Arezzo and Monte SanSavino. That way they get their fill of Italy - while you always get to see something new.

Buon Viaggio

Would also suggest train to Florence as the train station is central and you're close to all the main sights.

As Donna and Micaela have suggested, some great day trips would be into Chianti: Greve, Radda, Panzano, Castellina, San Donato in Poggio... not all on the same day. San Gimignano, Certaldo, Volterra, Colle Val d'Elsa, Monteriggioni, Siena, the Val d'Orcia area has some great towns such as Montalcino, San Quirico, and Pienza, Montepulciano, Arezzo, Cortona. Lots of ideas for you to choose from!
There are lots of other smaller towns in between and in each area... so if you like something as you pass by the first time, you could stop the next time you're back in the area.
