Driving in Italy

Are there any special requirements for driving in Italy, such as local European insurance or different license? Thank you

Jose c! If you plan on driving during your visit to Italy, you must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you should carry with your driver's license. Can foreigners drive in Italy? Yes, if you're visiting, you'll need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your legal driving license.
Thank you so much. We were able to get our IDPs yesterday. Turns out you can get them from your local American Automobile Association (AAA) for US drivers. The car rental company told us we had to go to our embassy. Luckily that was not the case. Hopefully this info helps others.

Yes, the IDPs in the US are easier to get through the local AAA ( I think also online through them) but in other countries they aren't as easy.

Here in Italy, we have to go to the local motorizzazione office which is out of Florence, the equivalent of the DMV, and it is a pain to go there! It is far and lots of people and long lines, but in any case, each country has it's own place to get them at -- but I've never heard of them being available though an embassy! that sounds just wrong, what would they know about driving licenses?!

Thanks for sharing with us - and let us know if you have any other questions or how things go once you're here. We love to get feedback on how the vacation goes :D
