Easter in Toscana

Am spending a week in Toscana with wife and two kids aged 7 & 10 for the coming Easter period. This is our first visit to Italy. Am flying into Pisa airport on 15th April evening and being based in an agriturismo in San Miniato. Going to hire a car as well for the whole duration, which is going to end on the 22nd April morning.

1. Can anyone suggest a sensible itinerary which we can do?
2. Any suggestions on where is the best place to visit & spend the day of Good Friday on the 18th April?
3. Whether there are any events or processions that we can visit on that day?
4. Any suggestions for Easter Monday on 21st April?
5. Easter Sunday am planning to spend it in Florence, so I think that day is settled.
6. We intend to take the kids to the Zoo in Pistoia on one of the days as well, so believe that leaves us with just 2 to 3 days free to visit other places.

Would appreciate if anyone can help and suggest an itinerary?

thanks & regards

There are many processions on the night of the Good Friday in Tuscany, maybe you'd better choose a location not too far from San Miniato where you've planned to lodge, since all processions are scheduled after 9 pm: Cerreto Guidi for example is home to a wonderful procession in costume and is at only 20 minutes driving distance from San Miniato. In Grassina there's a wonderful and renowned manifestation with more than 500 people in costumes: it's about 45 minutes driving.

During the day you could visit the Chianti region - close to Florence - and the Florentine hills, enjoy the breathtaking panorama and some wine-and-food tasting before going to the location you prefer and taking part to the holy procession.

As reguards Easter Monday, in Italy we use to spend the whole day open-air - weather permitting obviously - planning some daily trips.
Considering you'll be flying out from Pisa the next day, you could visit the Leaning Tower city for example, or Lucca - not too distant - without driving so much.

You could instead go to Siena, San Gimignano and Val d'Orcia the days before Easter, that is once you get to Tuscany (you could also spend a night there). If you think these destinations are a bit too far, there are other marvellous locations to visit northern of San Miniato, as Versilia (with Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi and all the famous places of the Tuscan coast) and Garfagnana.
