Which cities?

Hi all!

Myself and my partner will be in Tuscany for 9 days in September. It will be a mix of sightseeing and relaxing. We have an agriturismo as a base and we'll probably visit 4 or 5 cities/towns while we're there. So I need your help in narrowing them down :)

We've done Pisa and Florence a few times and visited Siena and San Gimignano on our last trip. San Gimignano was definitely our favourite out of those. I love culture, musuems, etc but my partner is more into wandering around and great views so a mix of both would be great. I'm trying to stick with places an hour or so away but there's too many too choose from. What would you say are the must see from these? Or are there any I've missed out on. I'd love to visit Lucca but it's nearly 2 hours so might be a bit far for one day.

Arezzo FANTASTIC, I love this city and it is a lovely combination of museums, sites and great food. It could be combined with Cortona - - personally I found enough to fill a day at Arezzo. http://www.discovertuscany.com/arezzo/

You don't say where your base is in but you can most definitely group several on your list into the same day trip --

Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza (you could split this into two days and do Montepulciano and Pienza on one day, then do Montalcio, San Quirico, Bagno Vignoni and Buonconvento on another).
Greve in Chianti -- I'd add Radda, Castellina and Panzano
Volterra - you can stop in Colle Val d'Elsa on the drive there
Arezzo, Cortona
Montecatini -- you could add Lucca to this day trip

Sorry I should have said! We're staying in an Agriturismo called Incrociata - the nearest big town is Ambra (about 4k away).

*I think* we've narrowed it down now. We're going to do:

- Volterra
- Montepulciano plus a visit to a winery nearby in the afternoon
- Montalcino and Pienza

Then if my boyfriend agrees to another day sightseeing we'll do Arezzo and Cortona :) We're doing a cooking class and another food tour so we have a packed schedule already!

I think I'd rather visit a few places and see everything rather than visit more and not get the full experience.

So now I'm wondering if it would be better to do Montepulciano and Pienza in one day and not visit Montalcino. Then we could do a day in Arezzo and Cortona. We're both very into good wine - our favourites being Montepulciano and Brunello - so it seems a shame to miss either place but then I'm sure I can get them in shops everywhere?

Hi -

it is definitely a tough call - but I can offer that both Arezzo and Cortona have some excellent wines, that might just have you changing your mind about those favorites of yours.

I would suggest heading over to these two towns because they both merit it!

You can most definitely find Brunello and Montepulciano wine pretty much everywhere, particularly wider choice once you're in that area.
I would vote for Montepulciano + Pienza and then Arezzo + Cortona ;-)

I've been to Incrociata, you'll love it and is a great base -- in an area of lower Chianti with great views too, not as heavily populated by other farmhouses.
